From Canvas to Cloth – Introducing the Lantz Collective Designs from Kravet

artist Barry Lantz.png

Inspired by the art of Barry Lantz, and in conjunction with his daughter Amanda, Kravet has recently partnered with the Lantz Collective to offer a “casually elegant” offering of both fabrics and original artwork.

Moving from the studio to the design showroom, and clearly inspired by Barry’s own personal artwork, Canvas to Cloth is an on-trend collection of prints and complementary solid wovens.

Not only that, but each pattern is named after an important woman in his life. “The naming of the patterns came easily,” says Barry, “there are and have been many special, influential women in my life and each pattern truly expresses my feeling for each of the women I chose to recognize.”

From Art Studio to Design Showroom

For Barry, art and design are closely tied. “Both are influenced by color, scale, form, and geometry,” he says. Barry’s first love is art, but he seamlessly made the transition into designing stunning fabric collections and interiors. “The end result of good art and design is how one feels after experiencing it,” he says. Barry used his artistry background to create Canvas to Cloth which features an array of fabrics in breezy, cool, and artistically brushed colors.

One of Barry’s favorite patterns in the collection, and arguably the pattern that anchors the collection, is Goldie, which is named after his beloved grandmother. When asked about his grandmother who encouraged his artistic abilities, Barry says, “for me, Goldie is the most important and unique pattern of all.” This is an ikat pattern interpreted into a kaleidoscopic design and reflects much of Barry’s art style.

Another standout pattern in this collection is Manders, named after his daughter and partner, Amanda. Barry credits Amanda as his inspiration and his reason to succeed. “Without Amanda’s design influence, the collection would not be what it has become,” says Barry.

Sherlee, Tracy, and Leesa are the remaining prints and are also reminiscent of Barry’s iconic artwork. Offering clean and bright hues, Canvas to Cloth has the ability to create an effervescent ambiance we all crave in an interior.

Also available through CuratedKravet are a selection of 21 original framed Barry Lantz art pieces. Barry, who has adored art since he was a child, has hand-signed the back of each piece of art.  The artwork selection consists of framed giclee canvas prints in a wide range of color palettes.

Century-Old Kravet Explores Own Heritage with Kravet Couture & Modern Tailor

modern tailor collection.jpg

Based on the title of this blog post, you might think we’re explaining an altered business model from the industry leader in luxury home furnishings. After all, touting a line from Kravet named the Modern Tailor Collection could raise an eyebrow or two. However, such is not the case.

Instead, for those unaware of the company’s ongoing exploration of their heritage, Kravet Couture presents you with a collection of elegant fabrics and complementary wallcoverings. For them, this is a way for them to pay homage to their founder, Samuel Kravet, who emigrated to the US and began working as a tailor more than a century ago.

Considering the source, it should come as no surprise that, above all, “Samuel Kravet’s skilled artistry is mirrored in the exquisite details highlighted in this elegant collection.”

Kravet couture.jpg

Coordinating Styles and Textures are Featured

So much more than an overly simplified mix 'n match approach to coordination, “The juxtaposition of scale and pattern across the whole collection offers a wide range of coordinating styles. Soft textures are blended with sharper edges and sculptural geometric  patterns; the beauty lies in how the collection sits together, much like how one would put together an outfit.”

With a name like Modern Tailor, this collection has been created as a tribute to runway fashion and trendy design.

“Finely stitched embroideries, pleated fabrics, patch-worked wools, cozy cable chenille, and mélange knits are reinvented into luxurious fabrics and wallcoverings relevant to layered decorating of today.”

Kravet modern tailor.jpg

Throughout the collection, Kravet continues the theme of a professionally designed and hand-tailored presentation. This is the type of twist on haute couture that will make design clients feel as though their home has become the center of high fashion.

The spotlight on style is forever brightened by, “The tailoring techniques Samuel Kravet fell in love with one century ago [which] are rendered relevant today, and are further brought into the present with updated modern construction and contemporary color stories.”

Bespoke tailoring techniques abound in the collection. “Dresscode features an updated houndstooth pattern, New Suit features a modern patched large stripe, and Proxmire is an exploded weave meant to mimic your favorite cable-knit sweater.”

From the most finely tailored fabrics which can be artfully layered with wallcoverings that add depth and texture to any space, the Modern Tailor Collection from Kravet Couture will challenge even the best designer to match its creative spark.

Luxury Furnishing Lead Times (Can we say current lead times suck?!?)

furnishing lead times.jpg

What’s the number one factor you consider when choosing a luxury furnishing supplier right now? While it used to unquestionably be quality, feel, and/or looks, the emphasis has shifted to availability for many, if not most, designers and retailers. In other words, luxury furnishing lead times have become a singular priority for a majority today.

As explained in a January article at BusinessOfHome.com: “It’s no secret that lead times are stretching ever longer as COVID drags on – and that many clients are getting impatient. The delays have cut across categories, from bespoke upholstery to tile and kitchen appliances; even many of the quick-ship retailers [and wholesalers] can no longer deliver on tight timelines.

“Shutdowns of the manufacturing floor with the onset of COVID instigated an initial round of delays, which were compounded by a slow return to production as companies navigated new safety protocols. More than one year later, many major manufacturers still aren’t staffed at full pre-pandemic capacity, which makes it much harder to catch up on the backlog.

“And every time an employee tests positive for COVID, many more workers with whom they came into contact are sent home to quarantine, which only exacerbates the delays. Add soaring freight costs and a scarcity of raw materials (plus a shortage of containers to ship them in) and it quickly becomes clear that this is a mess with no easy answers or antidotes.”

It goes without saying that lead times have always been an issue in the luxury furnishings industry. Whether products were produced on the other side of the globe or were made by hand in an artisanal house locally, delays of weeks became the norm. Today though, lead times for all types of furniture, not just for the category of luxury furnishings, have exploded into months.

Where to Go for Reasonable Delivery Lead Times

What does all of this mean for you and your interior design or furnishings business?

While it may be “Kewl!” to work with the newest or trendiest line, a small house that creates unique designs, there are times when you are far better off working with the Big Boys (or Girls) instead. Stated simply, the larger brands and manufacturers have the infrastructure to cope more effectively with world-changing events.

For example, Kravet is known as the industry leader for a variety of reasons, most of which have little to do with them being more than a century old and being the Biggest of the Big Boys.

Beyond those, they truly have their house in order and possess the logistical know-how and experience to provide you with outstanding service while others struggle (and frequently fail) to deliver products in a timely fashion.

Right now, Kravet is only running a few weeks behind their normal production. In fact, their QuickShip frames, which normally would ship in two weeks, are shipping in 15 working days. All other frames, which normally ship in eight weeks, are currently shipping in 10-12. There are some caveats and disruptions but the customer is always kept informed!

Of course, the fact that all Kravet SMART frames and fabrics, which are the foundation of the QuickShip program, are guaranteed produced right here, in the USA, is a sheer genius when it comes to quicker than average lead times.

The Well-Tailored Addition of Donghia Furnishings from Kravet

Donghia Furnishings.jpg

Iconic designs with an Italian flare from a purely American company. Is such a thing even possible? Well, when the industry leader to-the-trade gets involved, of course it is! And so, for those yet to know, we are happy to announce that as of last summer the Donghia line of fine furnishings has become the latest member of the Kravet family of brands.

The acquisition included the Donghia brand name, the company’s intellectual and digital property, its designs, archives, and all current inventory. Never a design house willing to rest on its laurels, as evidenced by the addition of heritage textiles brands like Lee Jofa, GP&J Baker, and Brunschwig & Fils over some 25 years, bringing Donghia into the Kravet family was something of a “no-brainer”.

As president of Kravet Inc. Cary Kravet said in a statement, “The Donghia brand is distinctive and enduring. It stands for the inherent beauty in clean lines and the appreciation for impeccable quality in materials and construction. The Donghia aesthetic and brand market position are fully complementary to our current brands and aesthetic positioning. The look and attitude are wholly additive for us.”

Why Donghia Furnishings? Why Not!

new from Kravet.jpg

The Donghia tag line, “Live a well-tailored life” is merely a hint at the innovation and quality to be found in the fabrics, furnishings, and wallcoverings from Donghia. Founded by Italian American interior designer Angelo Donghia in 1968, iconic Donghia collections have consistently reflected a dynamic and innovative approach to design. In a stunning fusion between handcrafted workmanship, modern looks, and trendy designs, the collection includes textiles, furniture, wallcoverings, case pieces, accessories, and upholstery.

According to Kravet, the hurdles to bringing a reimagined Donghia line to market are less about logistics and more about the brand and product development. “Believe it or not, [the integration] is the easy part. The hard part is the softer side – understanding what the brand is and where it should go. That takes a lot of thought, communication, research, and understanding.”

As a result, the relaunch will take time. Kravet says that the company’s first Donghia collection will likely focus on the brand’s most iconic patterns and pieces; a release that can be folded into existing showrooms while a more robust revamp is developed. (BOH.com)

Over the years, Donghia produced fabric, wallcovering, floor covering, furniture, lighting, and accessories; all product lines Kravet ultimately plans to develop and relaunch. The company also acquired Donghia’s archive, including some of its late founder’s sketches and original furniture prototypes. These will all be folded into Kravet’s deep archive at its headquarters in Bethpage, New York, and which will inform the work of the product development team.

Our Continued Commitment to the Luxury Furnishings Industry

Kravet remains committed to supporting and expanding the luxury furnishings and design industries, just as we do at TD Fall:

“We’ve been in this business for over a hundred years, and we really believe in this industry,” says Kravet. “There’s no real short-term advantage in this [acquisition] – it’s a long-term strategy. This is part of our belief in the strength of this industry.”

Service and Availability Are Priorities for Kravet Fabrics and Furnishings

From guaranteed in-stock fabrics to their innovative online Configurator for creating custom furnishings for your clients, Kravet has made service and availability their highest priority. Perhaps more important from an end-user’s point of view, quality and originality have not suffered in the least.

In fact, since the company’s founding in 1918, the business started by Samuel Kravet and his four sons has become the industry’s primary resource for fabrics and furnishings.

The business has never been the type to rest on its laurels or reputation, but rather, has always labored to remain at the forefront of the design and furnishings industries. As Kravet’s chief process and innovation officer Jesse Lazarus recently proclaimed, “It’s incredibly important to resist assuming you already know what your customers want and need.”

“Suppliers need to bring the threshold to the customer, rather than waiting for that customer to come to the supplier,” he explained. “[All] buyers are consumers in their own right, and their desire for service and availability is shaped by the environment where they do their own private shopping [whether digital or face-to-face]."

service and availability.png

What is the Kravet Configurator?

In a time when personal interaction is at the very least frowned upon, and in some cases punishable by force of law, servicing the client demands new and innovative solutions. In some ways, our digital age makes this far easier than feared. In some, less so.

For those who are able to imagine and visualize original approaches to long-standing challenges, as well as new ones, the future can be incredibly bright. And, as many of us have come to expect, Kravet is again leading the way by developing resources and offering digital remedies to the obstacles we are all facing.

For example, imagine being able to fully visualize and customize the furnishings you hope to offer your home design clients. Will that new sofa and chair ensemble appeal to them in fabric A, or would they prefer fabric B? If only you had an image of the pieces in both!

With the Kravet Configurator, you do.

Now, with a 360-degree view of the products you're considering and using their custom Configurator, Kravet has made it much easier for interior designers to visualize their style choices on a variety of furniture frames. As you make choices to customize individual pieces, pricing is automatically updated for you in real-time.

If you're like most interior designers, your buying process begins with requesting samples, so Kravet focused on making that as simple as possible for you too. With a mobile-first strategy in place, Kravet has also simplified the process of reaching out to mobile users and a variety of platforms. This enables you to work seamlessly from your studio or on-site, from a client’s home or office.

Does that sound like a tool you could use in your design business?

NOTE on Availability: At this time, Kravet is continuing to develop and test the program, with an expected rollout coming in the New Year. (Finally, we all have something to look forward to as this crazy year comes to an end!)

For now, it is available on Kravet’s QuickShip program and the Kravet Tailor and Lee Jofa Workroom collection, which are partially up and running. Now would be a great time for you to begin familiarizing yourself with the Configurator so you are proficient in its use when you need it later.

Let Us Help You

As with so many innovative solutions, it can take a bit of time and practice to familiarize yourself and use the Configurator. But hey, that’s what we’re here for. We can answer virtually any question you may have about this virtual design tool (see what we did there?) and would love to guide you in the use of this amazing tool from our favorite luxury furnishings manufacturer.

Also, don’t forget, our founder Ted Fall, a man for whom service and availability have always been priorities, is available for business consulting support to interior designers and furnishing store owners. Get in touch with TD Fall today.

Social Distancing Makes Marketing with Video More Important Than Ever

marketing with video.jpg

We've written a few times now about the importance of marketing with video. However, as social distancing continues to impact all of our lives on so many levels, the importance of video marketing for your design business has grown significantly. (And, perhaps, exponentially.)

As we mentioned in a previous post, it's already true that remote conferencing and video chat apps make "social distancing" the norm for many of us. Video conferencing has now become true for many interior designers who more commonly work with clients face-to-face. This newly enforced need to work remotely has likely led you to reimagine how you can build relationships with prospects (and current clients) when you are unable to appeal to them in person. (Or, perhaps more accurately, not allowed to do so.)

Even as many of us wonder if the craziness will ever end, you should take steps to preserve your business for the future..

The Value of Video Marketing as a Social Distancing Tool

The good news from all of this is: People who've never before attended an online meeting are becoming familiar with using video conferencing apps. They're also becoming ever more comfortable grabbing information that matters to them from platforms like YouTube, Vimeo, and other video sites. (Of course, they're also getting plenty of sketchy dis-information; but hey, we'll just leave that subject for another time and place!)

As a way to limit the spread of contagious diseases, keeping social distancing involves the simple tactic of keeping extra space between yourself and others in typical situations where you might interact. Grocery shopping, working in an office, and going to school have all become a bit scary, as has sitting in a prospect's home, and sharing your design ideas.

This begs the question then of how all of this could enhance the value of video marketing. Well, as the fear of personal interaction has grown, so has the importance of video for promoting your marketing message!

According to online video production sites like Animoto and Biteable.com, video drives traffic to your website. This increases the odds of visitors being comfortable interacting with you remotely.

Online marketing has always been about one thing – making connections. Yet, people are feeling isolated right now, which is why viewing online videos has jumped exponentially in the past few months. Knowing this, a sharp interior designer can put this valuable information to use in their interest – as well as in the interest of their clients and prospects.

Which Types of Video Work Best During Social Distancing

According to NBCNews.com, "YouTube says its data show more than 500 percent increases in views on March 15, compared to the daily average for rest of the year, for personal activity videos with the terms "at home" or #withme. Videos on meditation (55 percent), cooking (100 percent), and working out (200 percent) also increased in mid-March compared to the same time last year, the platform said." (emphasis added)

While we're recommending you use video conferencing to meet with clients and prospects, it's also important to mention how valuable it can be to share videos on social media and your website.

Why? Because videos get attention and increase interest in you and your business! According to Biteable.com, there are 11 types of videos that are getting the most attention right now:

  1. Interview/Q&A

  2. Behind-the-Scenes

  3. Feature/Product Video

  4. Live Videos/Live Streams

  5. Promos and Deals

  6. Giveaways and Contests

  7. User-Generated Content

  8. Announcements/Reveals

  9. Events

  10. Breaking News/Trending

  11. Tutorials/How-To Videos (these have always been a great idea!)

These subjects are hugely popular during lockdowns, as so many folks are looking for new types of entertainment or quality information. If you can use a variety of video presentations to present your services in a positive, informative fashion – and offer real value in them – you're far more likely to see substantial results!

How to Make it Happen!

The most effective videos have some common characteristics:

  • Entertain, inspire, or educate: Rule number one is to make your video valuable! Aim to either educate, entertain, or inspire.

  • Be attention-grabbing: If your video's not engaging in the first few seconds, your fans are likely to keep right on scrolling. Add an eye-catching title card and aim to grab viewers' attention in the first 3 seconds.

  • You may not need sound: Make sure your video works well without sound (most videos on social media are on mute until the user chooses to turn on the sound). If you want people to listen, encourage viewers to tap for sound in the video description or captions.

  • Use captions: Lots of pages have success with completely wordless or text-only videos. But if the dialogue is a must, add captions so viewers can follow along.

  • Keep it brief: Short videos tend to perform best on social media. We're talking 2-3 minutes tops on Facebook and Twitter. Instagram only allows videos of up to one minute, though the old upper limit of 15 seconds is still often a good length to aim for.

  • Try interesting angles: Bird' s-eye or drone videos, 360° views, Go-Pro action shots…try making videos that offer viewers a seldom-seen view.

  • Let 'em repeat: Videos on Instagram loop automatically, as do short videos on Facebook and Twitter. Take that into account when you're creating them — you might even want to try a seamless loop that viewers won't notice.

  • Be creative: There are so many fun apps that make it easy to create professional, visually appealing videos, especially for Instagram, though you may want to post on other networks too.

If this doesn't answer all your questions about how and why the value of marketing with video has increased as a result of the pandemic and social distancing – or how you can use it to promote your interior design business, then Get in touch with TD Fall today.

New Fabric Collections from Kravet – Nate Berkus, Studio C, Clark & Clark

new fabric collections.jpg

One would be hard put to find collections that diverge as much as the new fabric collections Kravet is now offering from Nate Berkus, Studio G, and Clark & Clark.

From colors to textures, from solids to patterns, and from embroidery to embossing, these new fabric collections present interior designers and luxury furnishing specialists with multiple opportunities to create unique settings in any home or office environment.

Well-Traveled Fabric Collection by Nate Berkus

In his first fabric collection for Kravet, Nate Berkus wanted to allow freedom for designers to showcase their distinct point of view. Incorporating inspiration from Nate’s many travels abroad, his new Well-Traveled collection offers a fresh perspective that mixes history, architecture, art, and craftsmanship.

new fabrics from Kravet.png

“Travel is always such an important part of anything I design. For this collection, we explored techniques from places such as Mexico and Peru, and also mined museum exhibits and archives for pattern inspiration. I wanted to create the perfect balance of curated pattern, technique and texture.” – Nate Berkus

Well-Traveled presents casual cotton and linen textures with the mix of archival prints to create light and livable rooms with the thoughtful care Berkus brings to every project. We’ll let him share his thoughts on putting together this new fabric collection.

“In the 20-plus years I’ve been doing this, it’s always been about giving people permission to tell their story and to live only with what they love. My hope for this collection is that a certain pattern or colorway will resonate, and will help add another layer to a room… Whether that’s as a set of drapes, a reupholstered sofa or a throw pillow.” – Nate Berkus

Roof Garden Fabric Collection by Studio G

Launched in 2016, Studio G is a second brand from Lee & Emma Clarke and is aimed at the mid sector of the market; lively, fashionable and accessible, appealing to aspirational and fashion aware consumers. In addition, C&C Contract collections are specially produced for the contract and hospitality markets, bringing a fashion-forward look to commercial spaces around the world.

studio g fabrics.png

With a generally light and airy feel, the Roof Garden collection of fabrics remains comfortable and compelling thanks to its outdoorsy sense of playfulness.

With names like cactus, rainfall, stepping stones, and terrace trail, these fabrics are an ode to nature, regardless of the space in which they are used.

Clark & Clark Fabric Collections

Founded in 1999 by Lee & Emma Clarke, Clarke & Clarke has established itself as one of the global leaders in the home furnishings market. The company now distributes products to retailers, manufacturers and interiors designers in over 90 countries and has earned a reputation for providing innovative designs, exceptional quality and excellent value for money.

The company markets its products under two brands; Clarke & Clarke, which is transitional in style, targeting the mid to upper end of the interiors sector and brings inspirational design from the catwalk to the home, and Studio G.
